Why there is no number 13 in Formula 1

The FIA Formula 1 World Championship entry list does not have a number 13. The number is generally considered to be an unlucky number. It was used in the early years of the sport but in the 1920s it was dropped after the Delage factory team suffered two fatal accidents with the number in the course of just a few months. The first was Paul Torchy, who crashed into a tree during the San Sebastian Grand Prix in September 1925.

That was the last major international event of the year and the Delage factory team did not reappear until the Targa Florio in Sicily in April 1926. Italian Count Giulio Masetti was in the number 13 on that occasion and was killed when his car went up an embankment and overturned near the village of Sclafani Bagni, near Caltavuturo. He was crushed beneath the car.

The second occasion was in 1976 when Divina Galica tried to qualify for the British Grand Prix in a Surtees entered by Nick Whiting, brother of the FIA’s Formula 1 Race Director Charlie Whiting. She failed to qualify.

Other countries have unlucky numbers, notably the Japanese. They do not think the number 4 is lucky. Thus when Tyrrell employed Satoru Nakajima and later Ukyo Katayama both raced the number 3.

New T's sneak peek

Hello again, we just wanted to say hi and to thank you for your support so far. It’s still early days for Flaming13 but things are starting to happen as we shift gears into 2013, it’s good to know we got you guys riding shotgun.

We have 3 new T designs landing next week, suppose we could call them our ‘Spring Collection’ and we can’t contain our excitement anymore so we’re giving all you F13 Newsletter subscribers a sneaky peak at the designs before anyone else, check these out.

We have our ‘FORGET REGRET’ design with it’s oversized back print with vintage typography and contemporary tattoo inspiration. This will be available on either charcoal or sand colour T’s.

Then we get all positive with ‘MY TANK’S HALF FULL’, another oversized back print with a retro, well-worn, biker-cut design on a black T.

Hold fast! It’s ‘LAST OF THE TRUE’, a free-hand, traditional tattoo inspired design with tattooed knuckles and classic nautical elements printed sepia on the front of a sand colour T.

All the T’s will have the ‘13’ printed on the opposite side as well as a unique printed label.
To start with we will only have these available in mens T’s but we will be producing some just for you ladies as you’ve given us such a fantastic response so far.
